From a Summer Project to Entrepreneurship

My entrepreneurship journey started with a summer project I was very invested in. While being an engineering student myself, I wanted to make a robot arm that students could build and program themselves, as a part of the educational process. What began as an experiment turned into a product idea, because the thing I wanted to exist for myself was the same thing a university lab or a classroom could use.

From Prototype to Product

Turning that into a company was a different kind of engineering. As a one-person team you are the engineer, the manager, the sales-person, and the support channel at once, and the hard part is deciding what not to do this month.

A prototype answers if the idea works, but the product has to answer a lot more. Supply chains, inventory risks, certifications, compliances. None of that is visible from inside the lab, and every hour spent on it is an hour not spent improving the product itself. Learning where to draw that line was slow, and I got it wrong more than once.

The Value of Having Support

Satakunta Biovalley was the help my young business needed: they gave structure to a period that would otherwise have been improvised, asked the questions I hadn’t thought to ask myself, and guided me through the inevitable confusion of being a first-time entrepreneur. Working with people who had seen this stage many times before made it easier to tell the real problems apart from the ones that only feel urgent.

Starting a company alone is difficult, but it doesn’t have to be done without support, and having that support early is what made the difference.
